1. Turn the tonometer on

• Press the lower button until you hear a beep.

• The machine will read “load” when it’s ready.

  

2. Load the probe

• Hold the machine parallel to the floor.

• Place the single-use probe into the machine.

  • The metal probe goes into the tonometer.
  • The white ball should be sticking out of the tonometer.

  

3. Keep the tonometer 90 degrees perpendicular to the floor

• Hold the machine either parallel to the floor or 90 degrees perpendicular to the floor at all times to prevent the probe from falling out.

  

4. Set up your patient

• Sit your patient up in a chair with a headrest behind them.

  • The tonometer will not work unless your patient is 90 degrees upright.

• Line up the grey top piece with the patient’s forehead.

  • Use the gear on top to adjust the length.
  • The probe should be about 4-8mm away from the cornea, directly in front of the patient’s pupil.

  

5. Take your measurement

• Press the lower button to take a measurement.

  • The machine will beep and the probe will touch the patient’s cornea.
  • You can manually take measurements by pressing the button in rapid succession, or hold the button down to take them automatically.

  

6. Read and interpret the pressures

• The machine will take an average intraocular pressure reading after about 6 readings.

  Normal IOP = 10-20 mmHg

  • Anything higher than this is an elevated intraocular pressure.

  

7. Reset and measure the other eye

• Press the lower button to reset.
  • It should beep and clear the screen.

8. Troubleshoot error messages

• The machine will give you an error message if you are too far or too close to the patient’s cornea.
  • Correct this by adjusting the length of the grey bar which anchors the machine on your patient’s forehead.
